Bollywood film industry is one of the biggest movie factories in the world!
The quality of cinema has lately evolved in Bollywood for the good, but its a known fact that multiple Bollywood films have been “inspired” by western cinema.
Thus, it will not be surprising that many people will be surprised reading the title of this write-up. But yes, you read it right!
There are a few Hollywood movies which seem to have drawn inspiration from Bollywood flicks, with similar plots or scenes.
Here I have a look at various Hollywood films which are inspired or remade from the Bollywood counterparts.
Fear (1996) – Darr (1993)
The names of the flicks are not the only things common. Darr was a phenomenon in India when it was released in 1993, establishing Shah Rukh Khan as a big star.
The Bollywood movie tells the story of a stalker who is hell bent on getting the girl he loves. No need to mention that the Mark Wahlberg starrer also has the same story.
The only difference was that Mark Wahlberg dupes the girl into becoming his girlfriend before the psychotic actions begin.
Hitch (2005) – Chhoti Si Baat (1975)
Before Will Smith taught some love lessons in Hitch, Ashok Kumar played the cupid / love guru in the 1975 classic Chhoti Si Baat.
Starring Amol Palekar as a lover wanting to get his dream girl, the movie has a very similar premise with Hitch, and though it may be a coincidence, the identical story does ring a bell.
Leap Year (2010) – Jab We Met (2007)
Jab We Met was about a a bubbly girl played by Kareena Kapoor Khan, already in a relationship, who meets a stranger, falls in love with him, gets separated and then reunites again.
Leap Year, starring Amy Adams, has a strikingly similar story. Infact, just like Kareena, Amy’s character too is in search of her supposed love when she meets the stranger.
Similar by chance? Hope so…
Pearl Harbor (2001)- Sangam (1964)
Now this may come as a shocker to most. One of the costliest Hollywood movies of all time actually has striking resemblance to Bollywood yesteryear classic “Sangam“.
The same love triangle between two friends and a girl was incarnated in both the movies. The only differences was that in Sangam, one of the friends was a pilot, whereas its Hollywood version had both.
Win A Date With Tad Hamilton! (2004)– Rangeela (1995)
Indian director Ram Gopal Verma was in his prime once upon a time. He made the classic blockbuster Rangeela which was no less than great piece of cinema. And it probably inspired a Hollywood movie too!
The basic plot of both the movies was same, a girl caught in a love triangle between her best friend and a movie star. The only difference was that unlike Rangeela, Win A Date With Tad Hamilton! was a dud and hardly anyone saw it.
A Common Man (2013)– A Wednesday (2008)
The final movie on the list is actually a remake of the Indian movie “A Wednesday“.
Chandran Rutnam cast Academy Award winner Ben Kingsley to pull off Naseeruddin Shah‘s complex and nationalist character from the Bollywood thriller .
Sadly, despite the presence of Ben Kingsley, the Indo-SriLankan production tanked big time and not many even know about the remake.
