Mard ko Dard Nahi Hota

Mard Ko Dard Nahi Hota  is a 2018 Indian Hindi-language action comedy film written and directed by Vasan Bala and produced by Ronnie Screwvala under his banner RSVP Movies. The film stars debutante Abhimanyu Dassani, Radhika MadanGulshan DevaiahMahesh Manjrekar and Jimit Trivedi.

Bhagyashree‘s son Abhimanyu Dassani is makes his acting debut with this film.

The story follows a young man who has a rare condition called Congenital insensitivity to pain and strikes out on a quest to vanquish his foes.

This movie is officially the first full length feature directed by Bala but technically his second.

His first, Peddlers has never seen the light of day till date.

So, let’s find out if this plot works and why?

It is completely clear that Bala is a true blue fan of the cinema of the 80’s and 90’s

This is clearly evident from the way he treats this simple story.

He pays Homage to the greatest masala potboilers of yore while he is busy spoofing the Genre

Right from the opening sequence till the post credits, the tributes and pop references are right there in full display

Not for a moment do we feel we are watching a wannabe attempt at creating an Action Comedy

The moments created are relatable and remind that we have all been there at some point of our lives

Mard Ko Dard Nahi Hota works on various levels:

  • The treatment of the story & script
  • The brilliant mix of a Homage/Parody to the Genre
  • The Witty One Liners
  • Surprising us with narrative tropes we didn’t see coming
  • Making the audience believe in Suspension of Disbelief
  • The Spunky soundtrack
  • The Performances from the cast at all levels

To speak of the soundtrack, it remains contemporary and continues paying tribute to Bala’s vision

Some of songs used in particular sequences set the screen on fire like a visual poetry in motion which is a feast for the eyes

And lastly, the primal reason why Mard Ko Dard Nahi Hota works?

The Performances

  • Jimit Trivedi as the petrified yet over protective father is quirky yet typical
  • Shweta Basu Prasad in a cameo gobbles screen space with her over the top yet laugh out loud act
  • Gulshan Devaiah playing a double role is exquisite in his range of expressions and the portrayal of both characters

He imbues eccentrics to both the roles in a sublime yet understated manner

  • Mahesh Manjrekar as the Grandfather who gives flight to the Grand Son’s fantasies is in top form

Some of the scenes that he shares with Dassani, Trivedi, Devaiah and Madan are owned by him

  • Abhishek Dassani in his debut proves that the bug runs in his blood

The earnestness, vulnerability and childlike ideals he displays are out standing

Lastly, I would like to talk about the actor paired with Dassani

  • Radhika Madan after Pataakha essays another strong female character that is distinct yet classy

She conveys helplessness, despair, rage, frustration and angst all in an equivocal manner and yet matches every actor in the frame

Watch out for the scene where she and Dassani talk about an Itch(yes, you heard that right!). It is downright hilarious and timeless

This movie also teaches us how it is to live with a disorder of this sort and never to forget pain

But at the same time, it espouses the age old importance of Nobility, Good V/S Evil and believing in Making A Difference

Mard Ko Dard Nahi Hota evokes the fantasies many of us have harbored as children

The one where we wanted to vanquish evil or as Surya espouses: Paap Ko Jalaa Ke Raakh Kar Doonga!

Vasan Bala creates an Amazing Tribute to the Action Comedy Genre

I do know that Kesari released along side this one and is Good cinema

But if we don’t watch this Mard, then no other Mard will take the Dard to create a Zany world like this

I would say:

Iss Mard Ko Dard Hota Hai, Ek Baar toh Dekhna Banta Hai…

After All…. Bura Naa Maano, Holi Hai…

Thank you Vasan Bala for taking us down Memory Lane!

P.S: The film premiered in the Midnight Madness section of the 2018 Toronto International Film Festival, where it won the People’s Choice Award: Midnight Madness. The film was also screened at the 2018 MAMI Film Festival where it received standing ovation.
